There is no simple explaination anymore unfortunately. The parties try to emulate one another to gain support.

It used to be that Republicans were about less government in your life(less government nannying so to speak), and Democrates were about more government in your life(more regulation). If you thought government should step in and make sure everything was fair you were a democrate.

But over the years it’s all blurred and new people have taken over the parties. Democrates for a long while filled thier ranks with the liberal minded(this was not always the case), giving them a more socialistic look. While the Republicans ranks filled with conservatives, giving them a more stodgy old fogy look. Then it got worse when people started making broad stereotypes of each party. Democrates became tree hugging, cry babies who wanted to tax every penny out of you, Republicans became cigar smoking, ultra wealthy, religious nuts.

An interesting fact of history though, for all the demonizing the republican party takes, about being evil, rasist, anti-minority. It was the republican party who supported rights for blacks and later desegrigation of schools. Democrates fought long and hard to stop it.
